NSW Top Tourism Town & Top Tour Guide Awards

The NSW Top Tourism Town and Top Tour Guide awards are searching for the best towns and tour guides across the state, as they compete to be crowned the best in their class. 


The awards program, run by the NSW Tourism Association, brings a focus to regional tourism highlighting gems from coast to country, outback, mountains and river communities, and the tour guides that bring these towns to life. 


Local Councils and Accredited Visitor Information Centres are encouraged to nominate their town, followed by submitting an entry showcasing an itinerary, a video and a website with bookable product. 


Towns can enter one of three categories depending on their size: 

• Top Tourism Town Award – Population over 5,000 

• Small Tourism Town Award – Population between 1,500 – 5,000 

• Tiny Tourism Town Award – Population below 1,500 


Tour Operators and Tour Guides in all environments are encouraged to nominate their best guides to demonstrate their value in delivering the visitor experience.


All gold category winners go on to compete in Australia's Top Tourism Town and Australia's Top Tour Guide awards in this national program to celebrate the best of the best!

  • Nominations Open: Wednesday 5 February
  • Nominations Close: Friday 7 March
  • Top Tour Guide Q&A: Tuesday 18 March 1pm: Register here
  • Submissions Close: Friday 4 April
  • Public Voting Opens: Friday 11 April
  • Public Voting Closes: Sunday 4 May
  • Top Tour Guide Interviews: w/c 7 April
  • Winners Announced: Tuesday 27 May at LGNSW Destination & Visitor Economy Conference, The Tweed
  • Top Tour Guide Winners Announced: 4 June, Journey Beyond, Sydney Harbour Vivid Cruise
  • Australian Top Tourism Town Winners Announced: 10 September, Parliament House, Canberra

Nomination Fee + How to enter

Nomination Fee:

  • $320 + GST per entry
  • Nomination fees should be paid at time of nomination and are required to proceed into the awards program


All submissions must be completed via the Quality Tourism Framework portal.

  • Accredited Visitor Information Centres
  • Local Councils 


The entry must include a website that fits the following criteria:

  • Is a travel/tourism focused website that includes the town
  • Copy of the itinerary available on the site
  • Displays the video on the site 
  • Online booking functionality to book tourism activities within the town

The nomination can be made by: 

  • Tour Guides
  • Tour Operators on behalf of one of their Tour Guides 
  • Guides operating in the private or public sector


The Tour Guide must: 

  • Work in the natural, cultural or heritage environments in a paid or voluntary capacity.
  • Be available for a 30 minute interview as part of the judging process
  • Either as their own business or their nominating business, be Sustainable Tourism Accredited

 Information requirements:

  • An overview of the town, including target market and its commitment to tourism
  • A travel/tourism-focused website showcasing the town and its tourism operators, including an online booking functionality (or links to individual operator websites)
  • An engaging feature-style editorial (max 800 words)
  • A short vignette showcasing the town (30 sec - 2 mins)
  • A travel itinerary - designed for specified target market and available on website
  • A collection of high resolution PNG files 
  • Provide (4 - 10 depending on category) businesses with strong consumer reviews, for a GRI (Global Review Index) score to be calculated  


Consumer Vote: 

  • The public voting is managed via NSW Tourism Association, with support of our Major Partner NRMA.
  • Destinations are required to encourage votes for their destination within the public voting period
  • The town that receive the most public votes wins the NRMA Open Road People's Choice Award

 Information requirements:


  • An overview of the tour guide nominated
  • Provide details about a tour recently delivered
  • Provide details of involvement in planning, delivery, evaluation and customer service of the tour
  • Provide details of how guiding skills and knowledge are continuously improved 
  • Submission is limited to max 5,000 words 
  • 30 minute interview with judging panel (in person or online)


Interview process

  • The nominee will undertake an interview with a panel of judges who are experts in this field
  • Interview questions will be provided in advance and involve providing examples such as: how visitors are engaged and educated, what research is done to ensure valid information, challenges faced and how these were dealt with and what are the motivating factors

About the NSW Top Tourism Town Awards

The NSW Top Tourism Town Awards showcase the exceptional destinations from across that state and those that guide guests through them. Winners progress to the Australian Top Tourism Town Awards.


New for 2025 is the NSW Top Tour Guide category. This award honours the significant contribution quality tour guides make, in providing memorable experiences to visitors through interpretation of the natural and cultural environment in a responsible manner.

2024 NSW Top Tourism Town Winners

 The winners of the 2024 NSW Top Tourism Towns were announced, at the NSW Local Government Destination & Visitor Economy Conference in Wagga Wagga in May 2024. Winners of the 2025 NSW Top Tourism Town Awards will be announced in May at the LGNSW conference in Tweed Shire. 

 These awards highlight the very best of NSW’s small, medium and large regional destinations, showcasing their natural wonders, cultural attractions, and vibrant local experiences.

Large Tourism Town (Population Over 5,000)

Gold - Kiama

A coastal gem on the NSW South Coast, Kiama is famous for its iconic Blowhole, stunning beaches, and scenic walking trails. Visitors flock to this vibrant town for its natural beauty, outdoor adventures, and thriving local culture, making it a premier destination for all types of travelers.


Silver - Ballina

Located at the mouth of the Richmond River, Ballina boasts a laid-back coastal lifestyle combined with rich cultural heritage and abundant wildlife. Whether you’re exploring its pristine beaches or experiencing the town's lively festivals, Ballina offers something for everyone.


Bronze - Newcastle

As one of Australia’s most dynamic regional cities, Newcastle seamlessly blends urban sophistication with coastal charm. Known for its thriving arts scene, beautiful surf beaches, and rich industrial history, Newcastle has become a must-visit destination for those seeking a vibrant and diverse experience.

Small Tourism Town (Population Between 1,500 and 5,000)

Gold - Berry

With its dramatic mountain ranges, crystal-clear rivers, and rich farming heritage, this small town offers a perfect mix of adventure and relaxation, welcoming visitors with its strong sense of community.

Tiny Tourism Town (Population Under 1,500)

Gold - Huskisson
